CARDINAL BURKE REMOVED FROM CONGREGATION FOR BISHOPS

Cardinal Raymond Burke, an American prelate and a divisive leader of the Catholic Church's conservative wing, was today removed from a prestigious Vatican congregation that helps the pope select new bishops.

The Congregation for Bishops takes lists of names of potential candidates for bishop and whittles them down to a short list that's then sent to the pope for final approval. According to John L. Allen Jr. of the National Catholic Reporter, while the pope is technically not bound by the congregation's recommendations, he nonetheless usually selects their top choice when a position opens up. Consequently, the group plays a huge role in shaping the direction and ideological makeup of the Catholic hierarchy.

Cardinal Burke is still Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the highest judicial body in the Roman Catholic Church, but his conservatives proclivities are likely to be curbed by Pope Francis.  The pope has counseled simplicity in liturgical dress to Roman Catholic clergy and shown by example that he is serious, so the elaborate and flamboyant vestments may be relegated to the dustbin of history. Still, I won't hold my breath.  As you view the series of pictures of the cardinal in silk and lace at the link above, remember I had them first in my long-running series of posts with pictures here on "Wounded Bird".  Google search conveniently gathered the posts together into one link.

What other changes are in the offing?  Who knows if liturgical fashions will be never be the same?  What a loss!  I shall dress in mourning black...with a bit of lace and matching black gloves.

  1. And a single strand of pearls ... you must not forget the pearls as you ARE an Episcopalian lady now ... :-)

  2. I love his red hat, but the pointy gold hat is kind of weird.

    1. But would you wear the red hat, Ormonde? Out of curiosity, I'd like to know the exact height of the golden miter.

    2. 2.3 inches higher than the Jane Curtain prosthetic head in the comedy/sci-fin classic, "Coneheads" ... also known as 2/3 as funny as anything Jane ever said.

  3. The size of the miter suggests (in addition to, um, "over-compensation" ;-X) those of the (admittedly anti-RC biased) "invading crocodiles" agitprop cartoons of the 19th century.

    Thanks, Mimi.

  4. I'd measure it as WAY too high for Pope Francis.

    1. Francis seems not at all the type to choose Burke's clownish style of dress.

  5. You, my dear, are indeed obsessed with the liturgical vestments of Cardinal Burke. Such scoffing and mockery belies the 'good Christian' sitting behind the blog. Perhaps one should focus more on things spiritual, raising one's eyes nearer to God. Think of all the prayers or good works you could have done during all that time you have spent ridiculing Cardinal Burke and gloating over the fact that he has not been confirmed to the Congregation of Bishops. Pitiable.

    1. Ah, the irony of your smug self-satisfaction in reprimanding one for noting the vanity of another while stoking your own sense of spiritual superiority! It may also be a Christian duty to see the contradictions and behaviors of "leaders" that disqualify them from leadership and alert the crowd. Burke appears to be more interested in fashion than function ... Philistine or popinjay not yet certain, but neither worthy of any so-called "high office" of any priesthood. To see that and say so is a worthy use of time.

    2. Sandra should let me know where I refer to myself as "a good Christian", for I don't believe I have. I can't see how Cardinal Burke's extravagant vestments are in any way "spiritual, raising one's eyes nearer to God." Rather they seem to me to scream out, "Look at me!"

    1. Noted, Sandra. I shall endeavor to mend my ways, but I never know quite how that will go.

  7. This should be my favorite Raymond Burke picture. Its utter weirdness grows on one.

  8. Didn't link what I intended. I thought it would bring up "What's happening here?" from you Feb 11th, 2011 post. It didn't. Incidentally, I only now notice, checking the next image ("More kissing the ring") on that post, that the old pansy dyes his hair - dyes it, moreover, a shade that I think of, with nostalgia, as "Strom Thurmond Orange".
