No Tutu - Yes Coulter
Image from Wiki.
From Pioneer Press:
Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu will speak on a St. Paul campus next spring about peace and peacemaking - but it won't be at the University of St. Thomas.
St. Thomas leaders chose not to bring Tutu to campus after hearing concerns about "hurtful" comments he's made about Israel that might offend local Jews, a university official confirmed Wednesday.
The youth group that wanted Tutu at St. Thomas moved its conference to Metropolitan State University, where the Nobel laureate will lecture April 11.
St. Thomas' loss is surely Metropolitan's gain. Look at the picture. How could you disinvite that man?
St. Thomas has invited controversial speakers before. Two years ago, conservative author and commentator Ann Coulter came to the campus to speak about her book, "Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right," an appearance that required extra security.
....
Marv Davidov, an adjunct professor at St. Thomas, was incensed by the decision.
"I think the Israeli lobby in our country has been attempting to silence criticisms of Israel in the academic world. That does a disservice to the state of Israel and all Jews," said Davidov, 76, who said he experienced anti-Semitism as a child in Detroit.
He said anyone who criticizes Israel for treatment of Palestinians, and for tactics such as demolishing homes of suspected terrorists, ends up labeled as anti-Semitic.
Not only that, but Professor Cris Toffolo, who was chair of the Justice and Peace Studies program was removed from her position as chair. Because she is a tenured professor, she could not be fired.
What can the administrators be thinking? Desmond Tutu is a giant of a man, a living saint, a Nobel Peace Prize winner. They look very foolish.
Note: It appears that you may now have to register to read the article in the Pioneer Press, but you can read the story at Minnesota Public Radio.
Thanks to Juan Cole for the tip.

It's silly...
ReplyDeleteThe pro-Israel lobby has convinced everyone that Israel = God's people and it just 'aint so. Sad that a university, an institution dedicated to thinking and learning, can't see that.
The administration of St. Thomas will regret this for a very long time. They're a laughing stock.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are a laughing stock. Tutu spoke the truth, and we're afraid of the truth!
ReplyDeleteI'm so embarrassed.
ReplyDeletewhen tutu was on the Daily Show a while back, Jon Stewart pronounced him "the nicest man I have ever met."
I'm also embarrassed because I am from the Twin Cities. (the other one)
And Ann Coulter does have a new book out.
In a just world, she'd be living in a cardboard box.
oh well
Didn't know about the Coulter business. Thanks for bringing it out. Had assumed that the priest who heads the college was merely clueless, but seems that we're seeing a pattern here.
ReplyDeleteDesmond Tutu speaks nothing but the truth. AIPAC has enormous influence on the foreign policy of the US, and the plight of the Palestinian people is very sad.
ReplyDeleteDiane, you have no need to be embarrassed. Hey! I'm from Louisiana!
Lapin, speaking of cluelessness, I think the administrators of St. Thomas are clueless with respect to both Tutu and Coulter. How could Coulter be a voice of reason for any "side" with her revolting ways? They appear insulated from the world that they inhabit.
Oh, what I would give to have Tutu in this diocese! Those people must be nuts.
ReplyDeleteOrmonde, that's what amazes me, that they would secure the prize of a promise from Tutu to speak and then turn him away.
ReplyDeleteFor what it says - which to me is quite a lot - the lead image on the university's home page is of a football player.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.stthomas.edu/
How can anyone do anything other than love that patently wonderful, loving, funny, Godly man? They are so up their own arses.
ReplyDeleteD.P.
Lapin, it looks like cheerleaders now. Perhaps the image changes, and somewhere in there is an image that has to do with academics.
ReplyDeleteThis is totally incomprehensible to me - absolutely baffling.
Football players, cheerleaders, whatever .....
ReplyDeleteThe problem with AIPAC is that it claims to speak for all Jews, everywhere. That pisses me off. I think if you're Jewish and you're living in relative comfort and safety in America, then America should be your first priority. God knows we have enough clean-up to do here after two Bush terms. And if you're more concerned with Israel, you can always go there and man the barricades, right?
ReplyDeleteThese asshats freaking embarrass me sometimes.
Ann Coulter???!!!??? Don't even get me started.
PJ, I think AIPAC has undue influence on our policies in the Middle East, and that's not right. I'll probably get flack for saying that.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, I am in no way anti-semitic, but as you say, AIPAC does not speak for all Jewish people in this country, but you would think that they did, because of the pressure they can bring to bear - such as in the situation with Bishop Tutu.
I know what you meant, Grandmère Mimi, and I agree with you. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd for what it's worth, there is no one I know (of any stripe) who wouldn't LOVE to hear Bishop Tutu speak. Even if they don't agree with him on absolutely everything.
I don't get it. Tutu offends no one, whereas Ann Coulter offends EVERYONE. What are these people thinking???
