The Feast of Pentecost
Restout, Jean II - "Pentecost" - 1732 - Musée du Louvre, Paris
THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Psalm 118:21-24
I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
John 16:4b-14
'But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.
‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.'
COLLECT
O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessings of Pentecost upon you always dear Grandmere.
ReplyDeleteYou are one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in my life.
Fran love, thank you. Blessings of Pentecost to you.
ReplyDeleteFire! Life! Energy! Peace! Hope! Love!
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a great spark in my life, Mimi.
Peace and love to every race and nation, people and tongue!
ReplyDeleteI love you too, Mimi.
ReplyDeleteThe Blessings of Pentacost be with you and all the communion of saints, in heaven and on earth, in the power of Holy Wisdom: blessed Mother, your Grace be upon us.
And today is 20 years since my confirmation as an Episcopalian at St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow - twenty years of being an Episcopalian.
ReplyDeleteweird.
Anyway, happy Whitsunday, Mimi, and I hope that you have a wonderful Mother's Day, too!
Everyone of you here bless and enrich my life. Thanks be to God, and thank you.
ReplyDeleteRR, you're the only one I have not met in real life. Maybe one day....
Dennis, congratulations! You are older than I am, Episcopally speaking.
So far, it's been a lovely day, except that my cell phone rang at the end of the sermon in church today - loudly. Mea maxima culpa! How terribly embarrassing.
I hope that we can meet up Grandmere. Perhaps the next time you are in NYC?
ReplyDeleteWe had a blessed liturgy this morning with bright red ties and scarves and T-shirts worn by many. Glorious music on organ, piano and flute (including a Swedish anthem to the Holy Spirit that was haunting, to say the least.)
The piece was announced by a short few lines from St. John's Gospel - in English, Polish, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Welsh!
All followed by a Mothers' Day toast in the parish house. There were even Mimosas for those who wished...
RR, your service sounds lovely. Aren't you glad that I wasn't there with my recalcitrant cell phone to interrupt the proceedings?
ReplyDeleteWe had red balloons in the windows!
Maybe next time I'm in New York.
O bother! Forgive me, but I forgot to add my congratulations to Dennis on the anniversary of his confirmation.
ReplyDeleteYou picked a great cathedral there, Dennis. I worshipped there twice in 1996 when my ship was in Faslane. Gorgeous building. Great liturgy. Warm welcome!
