I'll Be There

Rising Tide III, A Conference On the Future of New Orleans, August 22-24

This year will be my third attendance at the conference. The first two were very good, and this year's conference promises to be even better. I met all the "need-to-know" New Orleans bloggers there, along with bloggers who come from a distance, because they care about New Orleans and continue write about it, so the country does not forget the tragedy of Katrina and the federal flood and the disastrous aftermath of neglect, corruption, and abuse by the powers of government at every level. The bloggers are a great bunch. I won't name names, because I'm sure to leave someone out.

I've read the excellent book by keynote speaker, John Barry, Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America.

If you're in the neighborhood, or even if you're not, you might want to plan to be there. You can register through PayPal at the link above.

  1. If that's the book I'm thinking of, it is excellent. Prayers for you, the conference, and New Orleans.

  2. I remember when the first one was being planned, as I was still an active Katrina blogger, frequently conversing with the others at Daily Kos (where I've pretty much gone dormant). Wish I could be there! I look forward to your reports about it!

  3. I'll be posting from Minneapolis Sept. 12-13 (Claiming the Blessing/Integrity), and I think *you* are in for an amazing conference. You go, grandmere!

  4. Scott, good for you. We look forward to your reports. I'll need to buy a laptop before I can do serious posting away from home. I'm thinking about it.

  5. I'm not much of a reporter, but I'll do my best. I'm sure the New Orleans bloggers will do a fine job of covering the conference.

Scout Prime from First Draft blog usually attends. She has a post about the same scandal that I wrote about with a picture of our crew right before we gutted a house in Gentilly a couple of years ago. I'm in the blue shirt, holding the straw hat, and Grandpère is next to me in the baseball cap. The picture was taken before we started to work, when we were still clean. Just think, NOAH might have been paid for work that we did. I had not thought of that.

  7. It sounds like a great conference.

I want to let you know that I've given you a blog award. I know you don't do memes, etc, so if you don't want to do the "pass it along" thing, that's ok. But I at least wanted to praise your excellent blog.

The award is over at my blog. (I think you'll laugh when you see the name of it.)

  10. Scott, I'll consider it, but to be honest with you, we've had several bad experiences with Sony products, big-ticket items that went bad way before they should have. I'll probably stick with Dell. My Dell computers have served me well.

Jane and Göran, thanks. Remember, in Mississippi, the hurricane did the damage. In New Orleans, it was the levee failures. That's why I always say Katrina and the federal flood together, because the storm did not do the worst of the damage in NO.

  11. Ruth, thank you. I am honored, truly. You are correct that I don't pass on memes and awards. The memes call for time that I don't have, and in the case of the awards, I simply cannot pick and choose amongst many wonderful blogs.
