What Did She Look Like Before?

Sarah Palin in the governor's office in Alaska.

In addition to the $150,000 for clothes and accessories for Sarah Palin and her family, the McCain campaign paid out $22,800 to makeup artist Amy Strozzi and $10,000 to hair stylist Angela Lew, within two weeks, for Palin's appearances on the campaign trail.

Below is a recent picture.

Was it worth it?

  1. She always looks a mess. And her hair is revoulting. As for the make up - I wish she'd wash it off. What about all the travel and accomodation expenses for her sprogs? Where else in the western world does that happen? Not here.

  2. With all that money to burn, you'd think they would sling Joe the Plumber a $20 so that he can head round to Goodwill and spruce up a bit.

Been singing "Joe the Plumber" to the theme song of "Bob the Builder", the kids' TV show, for the past few days. Fits well and it cheers one up.

  3. I second what Mr Mortimer just said.

  4. Sarah Palin look disturbingly like one of my sisters. It really bothers me. My sister is not buried under multiple layers of makeup, but the resemblance is really quite unsettling.

  5. Michael says that the reason they spent so much money on her make up and hair is because no self respecting hairdresser or make up artist (almost all of them women or gay men) would touch her unless they got a huge amount of money up front.

  6. You know, on one level I have no difficulty with this. I'm sure Michele Obama has spent more than she normally would for clothing, hair styles and make up for this campaign. And, I think I read somewhere that the Obama Campaign has spent something like $400K just on food alone - for "working lunches and dinners".

It's just that, in terms of Ms. Palin, well, she annoyed me from Jump Street, so anything like this is just going to act as fuel to the fire.

Politics breeds weirdness. Always has. Always will.

  7. Is your sister a lying, clawing, vengeful piece of work. Mike?

  8. If Sarah hadn't played to Joe the Plumber and "real Americans", down home folks from patriotic small towns, it wouldn't be such a story.

Lapin! I'm sure Mike's sister is quite nice.

  9. It's one thing to spruce up, and God knows she needed it. But, for that kind of money they could turn me into Miss America. It's obscene.

  10. I heard that all the money spent on make-up is to disguise the fact that she is black.

  11. Eskimo, DP. I gather that the plastic surgeon's fees were something dreadful. They were covered years back by the Alaskan Independence folks, back before Miss Pert off and hitched her wagon to a far bigger star.

  12. But, for that kind of money they could turn me into Miss America.

    Even me, Lindy.

DP and Shalah Jean, one of you has nailed it. I'm just not quite sure which one.

  13. Counterlight, I believe that Michael has the right skinny on the makeup and hair-styling deal.

I should have known that she was not choosing her own clothes. They were too attractive and stylish. As for Scott Palin, clothes could never make that man.

  14. Looks to me like she had a breast reduction...

And shalah jean. I thought her husband was supposed to be Eskimo, but for the life of me, I don't see any evidence of it.

  15. The fact that the Republican Party paid Palin's makeup artist much more than they paid their chief political strategist seems to me the perfect symbol of the campaign.

  16. :: sigh ::

I'll probably get into trouble for this, but I kinda wish folks would lay off Sarah Palin's looks. With all the legitimate concern about how women are more often judged by their looks than men, and the exaggerated effect of perceived physical attractiveness on womens' self-esteem, it just doesn't feel right to be slamming her on this (and yeah, I'm as guilty as anyone with my "Caribou Barbie" comments).

And honestly, she's a perfectly pleasant looking, 40-ish year old woman. It's the insides that aren't so pretty - and that's what really counts.

:: down off my soapbox now :: ;)

  17. David, I am not criticizing her appearance. I'm mocking the hypocrisy of her pitch to Joe the Plumber and "real Americans" from "patriotic" small towns, while she spends many thousands of dollars shopping on Fifth Avenue and on makeup and hair styling. She styles herself as a down-to-earth woman of the people, but her actions show a different person.

Having said that, I do not see her as particularly attractive, but it's probably because I'm prejudiced.

  18. Oh I know, dear Mimi, I know... And I quite agree on the hypocrisy of the particular campaign tactic you mention :P

I was just starting to feel uncomfortable in general on the "appearance" comments about Palin that I see from my fellow liberals. The same way I wished conservatives would have laid off that sort of stuff with Sen. Clinton.

  19. One reason women are singled out for their appearance and men are not is that the men all dress alike. One dark suit is pretty much the same as another, even if there is a cost differential.
