Thought For The Day

Christianity is not so much a religion of optimism as a religion of hope.

Jane Redmont in When In Doubt, Sing.

I'm reading the book now, slowly, along with other books and magazines. Yes, I read more than one book at a time. Jane's book is quite good. You should buy it and read it. Buy from your locally owned bookstore, if you'd like to support them.

  1. Bless your heart, darlin'.

By the way, a great tactic (once you have supported your local independent bookstore) is to walk into your local book megastore, ask for the book, and if they don't have it, say you are shocked and horrified (or something to that effect) and ask them to order it immediately, and not just two or three copies please, but ten or more, because don't you know they make great Christmas presents and if they are properly displayed they will sell. (One of my friends went and stood the books up on the shelves of stores so that people would see more than the spine!)

It's called "stealth marketing tactics by friends."

Thanks for your definitely non-stealth p.r., and even more, thanks for the compliment!

  2. Jane, the point of the post was not primarily to sell your book. I liked the words, and they made a cool thought for the day. But I figured why not give you a little PR at the same time.

  3. Mine arrived in the post last week from Amazon. (I doubt it will reach Australian bookstores) Am using it for morning devotions so just a little dip at a time)

  4. Brian, I find that a dip at a time works very well, although sometimes I get absorbed in it and read for quite a while.

  5. I know you were just appreciating the quote, Mimi, and for this I thank you. I was just being shameless, as usual.

Brian, I'm so glad you bought the book. It is the kind of book you can dip into bit by bit.

I do think it's being marketed in Australia - Ave Maria Press has some kind of international distributor. Not 100% sure how widely that extends, though.

  6. I started it last weekend and have not had a chance to read more.

I love that quote. Of course I love Jane too!

    And you too!!

  8. (sorry for the double post)...I love the title. I've been preaching that for years! I once had an authoritative friend who suggested, "When in doubt, don't." Although that is good advice in existential terms, I have always thought that singing is almost always better.

  9. Keep on a-preachin' bro.

"When in doubt, don't", is no go. That could keep us from doing right when we hesitate a little because we may have to pay a price.
