Scenes from the movie "Becoming Jane", a life of Jane Austen, are accompanied by this lovely version of The the New Year's Eve traditional song. I couldn't find the name of the singer, but I'd surely like to know.
Update from Anonymous in the comments:
I also love this version of the song and found out it is Mairi Campbell, whom I've never heard of before. At first I thought it had to be Judy Collins, but after much investigation I found it is, as someone before me said, Mairi Campbell. Her voice sends chills down my spine in this song and now none others can compare! Thanks very much for the name, Anonymous. Next time you visit, please make up a name and sign your comment.

ReplyDeleteAnn, I don't find the song listed anywhere on the site. It's not in the sound track list. I'm not sure if it was even in the movie. I think I may have found the singer. She may be Jean Redpath, who has several albums of Robert Burns' songs.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip and Happy New Year!
I can see I am going to have to get this since James Cromwell is in it! I love him.
ReplyDeleteSounds a bit like Judy Collins, to me. It could be Jean Redpath, though.
ReplyDeleteThe Redpath version is here, last track on "Songs of Robert Burns: Volume 3."
Wee updatey:
ReplyDeleteIt's Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis - video here.
Susan, I think you'll like the movie.
ReplyDeleteMark, thanks so much. I love their version of the old song.
I enjoyed this Mimi. I also enjoyed the movie but then I enjoy looking at James McAvoy ( I was rapt in 'Atonement') :-)
ReplyDeleteHowever Jane Austen purists criticised it so do not expect true history.
Brian, I saw the movie last year. It was not true biography. I've read several well-written biographies and a collection of her letters, so this is one subject that I know a bit about.
ReplyDeleteI took the movie as a movie, not necessarily as a life of JA, which I knew it would not be. From that view, I enjoyed it, although I was amused by some of the liberties taken by the movie-makers.
I was gonna guess Maddy Pryor (So is this Mairi Campbell the New Maddy Pryor? Reminiscent of the ol' Hollywood joke:
ReplyDeleteThe 4 Stages of Fame
1) Who's John/Jane Doe?
2) Get me John/Jane Doe!
3) Get me a Young John/Jane Doe!
4) Who's John/Jane Doe? [Note: in H'wood, stages occur 10-20 years sooner for Jane, than for John]

ReplyDeleteIt's also used in the New Year's Eve scene in the (first) movie of "Sex and the City" and is credited to Mairi Campbell.
