Of Course, The Haters Were There

From the Huffington Post:

Appearing at the primary public entrance to the pre-Inaugural concert at the Lincoln Memorial, representatives from a group calling itself "Brother Ruben and the Official Street Preachers" protested openly-gay Episcopal Gene Robinson's participation in the event.

With a diverse and otherwise joyous crowd of adults and children of all ages streaming by, the three protest participants shouted about hate, hell and "homo-sex" - using a megaphone to assert that "homosexuals are eternally damned" and "Jesus doesn't love homosexuals."

Read the rest of the post and check out Brother Ruben's website. I won't link to it, but there's a link in the HP piece.

  1. Of course these people are always anonymous.
I have just left a message on that site but I used my real name and email because I am proud to be the gay person God created and continue to pray and give thanks for the Bishop of God's Love, +Gene Robinson
Grandmere, if you remove the anonymous message (as I would), feel free to remove mine

  2. Grandmere: I am a proud Episcopalian from New Hampshire and I adore our Bishop. He is a loving, helpful and wonderful person and has been so good for all of us in New Hampshire.

    Shame on the Anonomous person.

  3. Another craven anonymous poster. Don't come back with that kind of hateful personal attack. I don't allow that here.

Brian, I will delete the comment if it you like. It exposes the so-called Christian as what she/he truly is, a purveyor of hate, the very opposite of what Jesus taught - a reminder of what's "out there" in the name of Christianity.

  4. I think you're right - as long as they don't take over, they serve by way of bad example.

  5. Peggins, I love Bishop Gene, too, and I've never met him.

  6. I met him one wonderful day in late 2007 here in my church in Sydney. He gave me a big hug and I will never forget it. (and you know I am not overfond of hugging:-))

  7. Re. the trolls, sometimes it's important to leave them in the light. It has an ability to sterilize hate, and expose their grubbiness for all to see.

  8. IT, I left a couple, but I can't stand having a load of them in my comments. I'm receiving curses and being called a witch. It's ugly.

  9. sadly their ugliness is but a reflection of the condition of their spirit and their heart. Thank goodness for wonderful, kind, caring people in the world.

Just as bad (from their POV) - they thought you were a lesbian!

  12. Because of work demands, I was unable to meet +Gene during his visit to Seattle last week.

    Regarding the trolls:

    1. It is amazing that they have no idea of the window into their hearts they open for all to see. The "prayer" they would claim to make for others, reveals a people not at peace about their own faith, and a desire for all others to experience the same thing.

    2. If trolls attack, you must be doing something right. I wonder what would have become of Christ's Gospel if he had not been hated by religionists.

  13. Two Auntees, thanks. I hope something good comes from this.

  14. KJ, yes. The "prayers" for us "afflicted" ones are such a comfort.

  15. Brother Ruben and the Official Street Preachers

"Street", as in gutter: which is where they get the Bad News they "preach". [And wasn't "Ruben" the pervy eldest son who slept w/ his stepmother? (Gen. 35:22 and 49:3-4) Figgers! ;-/]

I'm sorry you're getting trolled. At first you can laught it off, then it is just tiresome, but after a while it can really affect you.

I saw in your subsequent post that you have now turned on moderation. That's good for the blog but it also means you're having to deal with all that stuff on your own.

Don't let it get to you. Prayers from me.

  17. Erika, thanks. It's a shock to be reminded just how ugly folks can be. I've known a few in real life, too.

    According to Wiki:

In the Torah, Reuben is briefly described as having had sexual activity with Bilhah, Rachel's maid; since his father had also done the same with Bilhah, leading to the birth of Reuben's half-brothers Dan and Naphtali, this is characterised as incest in classical rabbinical sources.

  19. It is my hope that even though Bishop Robinson's speech wasn't heard by the crowd for what ever reason, his inspiring prayer will be heard or read many times during the next four years. Just the fact that he stood before a crowd of thousands at a place of so much history speaks volumes in support of hopeful healing speaks volumes.

  20. Two Auntees, the prayer may actually get wider and more lasting exposure for not having been seen on TV.

  21. Mimi -- trolls are mindless little twits -- but I would take being called a witch as a compliment -- it is what scared people have historically called strong women.

    And we love you.

SusanKay, you're right - just so they don't burn me at the stake.

  23. Just caught up.

Consider it a consequence of standing up to be counted.

What role models they are for our Lord's followers.
