Only In Alaska

This guy raised an abandoned moose calf with his horses, and believe it or not, he has trained it for lumber removal and other hauling tasks.

Given the 2,000 pounds of robust muscle, and the splayed, grippy hooves, he claims it is the best work animal he has.

He says the secret to keeping the moose around is a sweet salt lick, although during the rut he disappears for a couple of weeks, but always comes home....

Thanks to Doug

  1. Why don't we tell Sarah Palin ;=)

There used to be an experiment with and elk cavalry a little over a century ago here...

  2. Göran, exactly. Palin might spot the moose while it was roaming during the rut. Training the moose for work and caring for it with kindness is much more humane than shooting it.

  3. Don´t bother with Sarah, she ONLY listens to the sound of her own voice...still, she doesn´t hear what she has to say as she´s too busy thinking of the next stuff.

  4. Does his sweet salt-lick lovin' moose-of-burden have a name?

  5. The way my mind is working today:

Those antlers are impressive, and I'm sure help our friend score da ladies in the rut...

...but they also make him more of target, for the likes of La Palin.

Could they be removed, but replaced w/ something just as useful to moose (in looks, and clunking horns w/ other bulls), but less desirable to trophy hunters?

    How 'bout Kevlar?

  6. JCF, that's all the info I have. I found the same story on the web, but there was no name for either the owner or the moose.
