Our Supper Tonight

Would you like to know what we ate for supper tonight? No? Well, I shall tell you anyway. Grandpère and I dined on sautéed green tomatoes and roast tenderloin of wild hog, cooked by the chef in the family, GP. Both dishes were delicious. You could say it was a minimalist meal, but it sufficed. A glass of wine furnished the finishing touch.

I should have taken a picture, because GP did not bread the tomatoes, and all the pictures that I find are of breaded green tomatoes. He seasoned them and sautéed them without killing them, if you know what I mean. The pork tenderloin was tender and juicy but was much less fatty than store-bought pork.

  1. I know exactly what you mean about the tomatoes, and they sound delicious.

How fortunate you are to have a gardening and cooking spouse.

Glad you had such a fine meal. Happy even of Epiphany!

  3. Mimi, I love fried green tomatoes. I bread mine with a combination of plain bread crumbs and crushed ritz crackers. The crackers provide just a hint of sweetness in contrast to the tart green tomato.

  4. What a fine supper. V envious. How is your accident-prone grand-daughter doing? Better, I hope.

  5. Whatever GP cooks and sets before me, I eat, and it's usually quite good. I'm so happy that he cooks.

Airedale, your tomato recipe sounds good, too.

Lapin, my granddaughter is doing well. She went to school today, and she says her arm doesn't hurt very much. However, she was quite tired when she got home. She can't figure out how she will do her math. That seems to be her main worry. Thanks for asking.

    Happy Epiphany Eve to all!

  6. Glad to read about your supper... I haven't had Southern fried tomatoes in years.

Glad your Granddaughter is doing better. How to write when that arm is cast is a puzzlement.

  10. I dawdled several hours over dinner tonight, too. Different ingredients, same end. Blessed twelfth night, grandmere, many thanks, and, well here we go, off toward Epiphany (time zone thing)!

  11. I had green courgettes, sweet red cherry tomatoes and spring onions with garlic, ginger and cracked pepper, silverbeet, broccoli and runner beans, all from fresh from the garden. I wish I'd had wine but I never drink alone. However as OCD, I have a problem with food - it has to be clean and pure ... meat never fit the bill. Still, I come from a family of farmers and meat eaters - and wild animal is their preference for it's lean quality, oink, quack and baa. I have a couple of hot shot nephews who for example went out hunting in the mountain bush before Christmas and murdered an oink and a honk as well as a baa, one morning. They goat and pig were on the barbecue were on the barbecue on Christmas day and the turkey was roasted. I ate alot of fresh berries and drank some champagne. There - you didn't want to know all that!

    I've never tasted green tomatoes...

  12. Scott! Thank goodness you're still in the land of the living. I was worried about you. Happy Epiphany!

Steph, your supper sounds delicious. I know that I shouldn't eat meat either. I prefer eating the fresh meat that my husband and sons bring home from the hunt, although I could never hunt myself. At least the wild animals lead a better life than those raised for commercial selling. It's odd that no one asked where the wild hog meat came from. It was serendipity from a deer hunt.

Green tomatoes are not as sweet as ripened tomatoes, but I like the tart taste.
