HOW YOU CAN HELP IN HAITI
An injured man carries his dead daughter on Jan. 13. People pulled bodies from collapsed homes, covering them with sheets by the side of the road.
First, all you praying people, pray for the people in Haiti, those who live there and those who will be helping in the recovery from the devastation from the earthquake.
I'm donating to the two charities below.
Episcopal Relief and Development
Doctors Without Borders (Médecins sans Frontières)
You may choose your own organization. Charity Navigator lists non-profits who will be giving aid in Haiti, along with their ratings according to the percentages of the donations that go to overhead and the percentages that go toward the people who need help.
A man calls for help as he struggles to escape the rubble at Port-au-Prince University on Jan. 13. Most of Haiti's 9 million people are desperately poor, and after years of political instability the country has no real construction standards.

UPDATE: From the White House:
Americans trying to locate family members in Haiti are encouraged to contact the State Department at (888) 407-4747.

Pat Robertson, ever the Man of God, pins the blame for the earthquake firmly on Haiti's pact with the Devil.
ReplyDeleteLapin, I saw the video. I'm so sick of sick folks like Pat Robertson that I haven't the heart to post the video. I suppose the practice of voodoo doesn't help - just like New Orleans/Katrina.
ReplyDeleteBetween him and Flush Limbaugh, I think I'm about fed up.... "We already gave to Haiti, it's calld income tax..." Winner and runner up for the Asshat Awards today. On a lighter note, Shep Smith on Faux Noise dissed Pat for his comment. Every once in a while a bit of sanity comes out of that nuthouse.
ReplyDeleteShep Smith is one of the least bad of the news persons at Fox. Sometimes he even corrects the idiotic comments of his peers at Fox.
ReplyDeleteERD will get money from me as well. I'm also giving to the Sisters of St. Margaret whose house in Haiti is demolished. The sisters are fortunately ok. I go on retreat at the mother house in Boston and love the work they do in Haiti.
ReplyDeletePrayers for Haiti!
ReplyDeleteAmelia, I gave to the Sisters of St. Margaret in memory of Fr. Jim Jensen, Klady's husband, as the family requested. The Sisters do wonderful work in Haiti.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will not post Pat's video. He does not deserve an audience. Praying for the people and animals of Haiti.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew, an officer in the USAF, was deployed to Haiti today. It is his first mission and I ask for prayers for him as he aids the people of Haiti.
ReplyDeleteAs I read the news here and at The Lead my heart is breaking. I am going to start a fundraising effort at school tomorrow for ShelterBoxUSA. For $1000 they ship a box with tents, stoves, pots, bedding, toys for the children, and other necessities.
May almighty God bless the people of Haiti and all God's people as we come together to aid them in their hour of need.
Thanks for other good suggestions for donations to organizations that give aid to Haiti.
ReplyDeleteRudo, I won't post Pat Robertson's video. It's disgusting.
Grandmere, I'd like to ask folks to remember not only the Haitians who are actually in Haiti but also those who live here in the US and other places, and now are left in limbo without knowing how their families back home (parents, children, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and all the rest) are faring, or even whether they are alive or dead. Many will spend the next few days sick with worry until they find out one way or the other.
ReplyDeleteI might add that the news reports I've seen say that all three of the facilities operated by Doctors Without Borders in Haiti were destroyed by the quake.
Kishnevi, yes indeed. Those in other countries who have relatives in Haiti are having great difficulty in getting news of their kin. Prayers for them also.
