THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
One path forward for the Roman Catholic Church to recover from the numerous revelations of child abuse by clergy and cover-up by those in authority might be for Pope Benedict to call for the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
It is hard to seek truth when you live in denial. It is hard to find reconciliation when you think yourself infallible.
These are ingrained institutional maladies in the system. Perhaps now is the time to see they are no longer productive, and are objectively disordered.
There is a saying in gay circles with respect to coming out that "The Truth will set you free!", but I think in the case of these RC scandals the truth would be more likely to lead to incarceration.
From an organization whose authority rests on belief in its own infallibility? Big, fat, hairy chance.
ReplyDeleteTrue, fat chance.
ReplyDeleteHowever it's a marvelous idea, Mimi.
Brilliant - maybe Abp Tutu could help them with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm fairly sure that the pope won't take my idea and run with it.

Tobias, "objectively disordered"? Oh dear! :-)
ReplyDeleteYour idea was discussed this morning on Democracy Now! (Listen to the whole report.)

Jay, I will listen. Remember that my brainstorm came last night. Of course, there's nothing new under the sun.
ReplyDeleteYes... ironic, ain't it?
ReplyDeletewv = eympt
