  1. There was a flash performance like this in a market place in the US. People were so pleased! Thanks, Mimi!

  2. Susan, I absolutely adored the reaction of the people in the café. I'm so pleased to hear that the folks in the US enjoyed the impromptu performance. I thought perhaps only Mediterranean types would appreciate such an interval.

  5. Me gustó mucho, Abuelita. Opera is a rich art and should be enjoyed by more people but the production costs are staggering so it is mostly an indulgence for the wealthy (like me, compared to most in the world). I can only afford a few performances a year but it a wonderful experience. I wish we could make it more available to the general public on a regular basis.

  6. Many more gifted musicians are looking for work, than there are jobs for them. I wonder if less expensive productions would be possible in more venues with the use of simple sets and inexpensive costumes, with emphasis on the music and acting, which would allow people who are not wealthy to attend the performances. It's done in some places but not enough to keep musicians working.

I'm amazed at the number of wonderfully talented musicians who are willing to perform for very little in our local music series.

Of course, I love the big productions with elaborate sets and lavish costumes, but, as you say, Paul, the costs are staggering.

  7. You know, we could always have more concert performances. Quite a lot of the time I find with opera the music washes over me so much that I almost stop watching anyway. So, the music on its own would be fine. It gives the musicians a chance to play while eliminating most of the other costs.

  9. Susan, thanks. That was wonderful.

Cathy, at times, I find myself closing my eyes at the opera and just listening.

  10. If you want an affordable and wonderful way of enjoying opera, the Met HD Live series is totally amazing. You can check it out on http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events_next.aspx

How else would St. Thomas, Ontario, have 11 great operas a season!
