WHAT I DID ON MY 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Don't feel sorry for me about the anniversary, because our family had a lovely celebration over the weekend. You may feel sorry for me for the stress and frustration involved with setting up my new computer, for I am in no way a techie. I forgot to install my printer, copier, scanner on the new computer and could not figure out why the printer wouldn't work, but that's now fixed. The task is mostly finished, leaving only a bit of housekeeping to be done, with only one rather major problem, which I hope is only temporary. My main email account is in Outlook Express, which Microsoft no longer owns, and Windows 7 no longer supports. Thus, when the contents of my old computer were transferred to my new computer, OE was not included. Woe is me!

My old computer is in the shop waiting to be worked on to see whether once all my documents, music, and pictures are removed, and the drive is cleaned, it will serve as Grandpère's exclusive computer. He doesn't load up a computer as I do and mainly uses it for email and searches. I asked the person in the repair shop to write in large letters: PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE OUTLOOK EXPRESS FROM THIS COMPUTER!!! If I lose all the material in my OE email account, I will be in one grand mess.

Aw, I used to love Outlook Express, too (esp. to check Usenet!) [Got switched to Outlook about 7 years ago, and (Mozilla) Thunderbird about 2 years ago]

  2. JCF, had I known what was going on with OE, I would have switched to Thunderbird. I was tempted, but I did not. How I wish I had now.

  3. Mimi,
Your computer troubles reminded me of this viral video that came out in the last few days. What do you think of these computer users (obviously older and not as tech-savvy as you & Grandpere!)

  4. Lori, what a hoot, I don't know that I'm more tech-savvy, nor am I sure that the couple is older, but thanks anyway. :-)

  5. Mimi, I can in no way help tho I wish I could, but I hope it all gets sorted out soonish. I hate techie snarlups and changing computers is a bit like moving house on a smaller scale, disorientating and bothersome.

  6. Cathy, I'm still dealing with bugs. I lost one of my counters, so I gave up and installed another. Our old computer is ready, and the person who did the repair said my email account is on a disk, which I hope is true, and I hope it will load, and I can find a way to switch to another program and keep everything intact. Then I'll see about getting access from the new computer. Aarrgghh!

  7. "This too will pass" ... ?

In the meantime you have all my sympathies - I just hate feeling cut off from what I'm used to technologically speaking. :(

  8. My brother-in-law said that he delayed retirement because he was afraid of loss of tech support. I can sympathize. Hope e-mail is well. ONLY thing I can say for AOL is that they keep my e-mail somewhere in the cloud and it migrates nicely between computers, sick or otherwise.

  10. Cathy, life goes on....

susankay, I understand perfectly. I had to learn to do things myself when I retired, and I learned sooo many techie maneuvers the hard way - by getting things wrong.

  11. Having a computer die, and then having to begin again with all the bugs is awful!! I've been there, too! My new keyboard is a wireless that reaches out and touches my year old Mac Mini, and I love it! It had a bit of a learning curve, but one I got it I've had NO problems since then!! Good luck working out your glitches - hope they go away fast!

  12. Ciss B, my new keyboard is smaller than the old, and I'm making a good many typos until I get the feel of the new one. My new computer works really well, and I love my new large screen, but it's getting everything set up that's time-consuming. Right now, the computer is my life.

  13. Mimi, if it's really all on a disk, then you can install Thunderbird and import it all from there and it should run just like your OE did. I migrated to Thunderbird and it imported all my email settings, addresses, emails etc. The only thing it didn't do was import the filters so the emails weren't sorted.

I hope it can do that from disk too!

  14. I stopped using an email program four years ago. I now use web-based email (gmail in my case) because I like being able to access my email anywhere, from anyone's computer. Also, gmail has the best spam filter I've ever come across. And all the emails are stored on the web so they aren't taking up my hard drive space.

  15. Erika, I have my Outlook Account on a disk, and I downloaded Thunderbird, but my new computer won't import the info on the disk. I'll try again when we get the old computer connected, which we're not sure we will do. I may have to connect the old machine just to try to get my folders from OE, or I may just consider them all lost, which they may well be anyway.

Tim, I use gmail, but all my blog comments come in thru gmail, and my other account is more for personal use. The other account is still functioning through my cable provider, but I don't have access to my saved material.
