ANOTHER SHAME

From Dennis on Facebook:
From my lecture this afternoon: Of all of the nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) only three (the US, Mexico and Turkey) lack universal health care. Every other developed nation in the world has it. And Mexico and Turkey are both in the process of implementing universal care. In four years America will be the ONLY country in the developed world without universal care.
Why can't the US, the richest country in the world, implement universal health care?

  1. It is fairly extraordinary when you think about it :(

The NHS is not ideal. It is excellent on emergency care and fairly crap on nearly everything else. Better that with all its failings than the US system though.

  2. Cathy, the US is good with emergency care, too, simply because there is a law saying that patients cannot be turned away from the ER. The trouble is that too many people go to the ER who could be served in a doctor's office as well, for much less cost, but, those who have no health insurance and can't pay for an office visit end up in the ER. It's a costly, wasteful use of resources.
