If you're interested in reasonable and non-hysterical summaries of the investigation of Bishop Mark Lawrence of the Diocese of South Carolina ('Episcopal' has been removed from the name of the diocese at the website) and the complaints (no charges!) against him by persons within the diocese, which the Disciplinary Board of the Episcopal Church is now investigating, as it must, check out the posts at The Lead here and here and the article at The Living Church.
In an update, The Living Church also notes that Josephine Hicks has recused herself as the attorney representing the Disciplinary Board in the investigation.
Earlier today I posted the link to Richard Hofstadter's The Paranoid Style in American Politics at Fr Harris's Preludium, and I'll do the same here. Notwithstanding that it was written almost 50 years ago, in the wake of the McCarthy era, it is invaluable, if not indispensable. to understanding the "reasserter" mind-frame.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mark - the way for them to address their issues with GC and Title IV is to present some changes via resolutions -- I think there are many on all sides who would work with them to make it better.
ReplyDeleteLapin, I started reading the article at your link, but I was interrupted. I'll finish later.
ReplyDeleteAnn, I agree with Mark Harris, too. Put the objections to Title IV in the form of resolutions to introduce at the next convention.
A resolution at a future GC to correct problems with Title IV is an excellent idea. However, it won't do Bishop Lawrence any good if he has already been deposed by then.
ReplyDeletePaul Powers, what you say is true. How I wish Bp. Lawrence had worked for change in the church within the processes, instead of practicing his brinkmanship.
