DAVID KATO - 1964-2011 - WE REMEMBER...

David Kato, Ugandan LGBT rights activist, was beaten to death one year ago today (Jan. 26). He is considered a father of Uganda’s gay rights movement.

Some blame religious rhetoric for his death. American evangelicals helped stir up the hostility that led to Kato’s death because they promoted a law imposing the death penalty for homosexuality. Shortly before his murder Kato won a lawsuit against a Ugandan magazine for identifying him as gay and calling for his execution.
More at Jesus in Love.
Blessed are you, gracious God,
creator of heaven and earth;
you are glorified in the assembly of your saints.
David Kato and all your martyrs bless you and praise you,
confessing before the powers of this world
the great name of your only Son.
Therefore we join our voices with theirs,
and with all who have served you in every age,
to proclaim the glory of your name.

  1. Thank you Mimi -- Keeping David Kato´s memory alive is an honor we share with our brothers and sisters in Uganda (at the Anglican Church and beyond the Anglican Church).

    Lord have mercy

  2. We don't need a covenant to do this sort of sharing. Besides, the Anglican Church of Uganda didn't even send a priest to preside at Kato's funeral, and the Lay Reader went into a rant against gays. Thankfully, excommunicated Bishop Christopher Senyonjo spoke the final words of blessing at the grave site.

  3. Exactly. BTW, I´m really please that Archbishop Orombi of ¨ecclestical protection¨ at TEC hatemongering (which, of course he was only able to hustle for a while because the state Supreme Courts threw the bum and his accomplices out) is retiring. He was the only one of those original Global South biggoted windbags I actually thought was a threat...the rest we´re/are either Gafconning artists or plain olde grandstanders at Church. One hopes that Uganda´s HOB´s will choose someone who only sounds evil (but isn´t actually a con man in flowing churchman drag who harms others) next time.

  4. How pathetic that we hope for the best for a Primate who only sounds evil, but that's the way it is.

  5. Memory eternal.

    Holy David, pray for us.

  6. How long oh Lord, how long....

And I fear the Covenant will only makes things worse...

  7. Horrible. I wonder if the anniversary has been noticed in Uganda.

  8. Scott Lively is still trying to wash Kato's blood off his hands.

  9. I'm sure Kato is remembered by his friends in Uganda, but I'm nearly as sure that there was no official public remembrance. It was a terrible thing and a shock to those of us who care about justice to see such a courageous man cut down in a brutal and untimely way.
