IS IT BLOGGER? IS IT GOOGLE?

My annoyance at having to type the word verification over and over is coming to a boil. Which entity is responsible for the repeated message?
The characters you entered didn't match the word verification. Please try again.
I'm careful when I type the word verification, and I'm quite sure I don't do typos every single time I try to leave a comment. Two tries is the absolute minium, and sometimes the number goes up to 4 or 5.

Hey guys, whoever you are wherever you are, it's way past time to fix the glitch. The folks who comment at my blog complain. I am complaining. No passing the buck here. Just fix the problem.

  2. susan s., interesting. Is it Firefox? Others have told me they have the same problem.

  3. But I must say, I don't like the two words in different type face. One is always very fuzzy and the letters are too close together. For a while I didn't notice that some of the letters were capitalized and that they had to be exactly like they appeared. What I don't like most is the sentence "Please prove you're not a robot".

  4. Many thanks from me, that is soooo annoying! I've often wondered if it is just me, now I know there is another sufferer.......

  5. I use Firefox and that does happen to me on blogger.com blogs sometimes. It is sooooo annoying, especially when I know I have done it correctly!

It is not as easy to set up, but I am very happy with wordpress as a platform overall. It is a huge pain to switch, but I did it.

PS - it JUST did it to me now, re-trying!

    PPS - and again

    PPSS - and yet AGAIN

  6. I use Safari also and don't usually have problem. Except just now.

  7. PITA, all right. I suspected that the problem did not extend to WordPress. Ah, Fran, change and me don't go together, but I'll think about WordPress.

Amelia, we may never know where the fault lies.

IT, I tried Chrome and had a disaster, so I switched back to Firefox.

  8. Mimi, changing to Wordpress is not for the faint of heart. It may not be worth it for you.

I guess it is just what you said... PITA!

Let's see how long this comment takes to post!

  9. Fran, when it comes to technology, I am fainthearted.

  10. Huh --this is the first time in a very long time I've had two words for wv....

While Joel was struggling with cataracts, he used the visually impaired version --but I don't see that option, perhaps because I don't have it turned on in my browser... but, perhaps something like that would either simplify or enlarge....

  11. I use Firefox and mostly only get the problem if it has taken a while to put the comment down. I think if I take too long it secretly changes the word. Or something like that, anyway. It is very annoying.

  12. I use Chrome, Mimi. It is really frustrating when u have written a longer post or are in a hurry, GRRR!

  13. They JUST went to two-word verifications. AND hard to read.

    Not happy.

  14. Nij, I guess it's neither Firefox nor Chrome that is responsible.

JCF, I haven't run into two words yet, but I suppose I will.

I remember the days before we needed WV, before the spammers were so aggressive.

  15. Many people have reported this problem in several threads on the Blogger Help Forum. There has been no response that I can see from anyone at Google.

  16. Those of us in the New York area enjoyed Frank Lesser's New York Times column this past Sunday on word verification (Times registration may be required to view).

  17. Happens with Firefox and IE for me.
Some days are worse than others.

  18. wdg_pgh, I find that the Blogger help forums rarely...um...help.

Paul (A.), too funny. The squiggly WV letters are a real challenge, and who doesn't want a real challenge early in the morning or late at night?

Erika, thanks. We're not yet near a solution, but at least we had an opportunity to vent.

  19. I use Safari and I have encountered this problem more frequently in recent weeks. Very annoying!

  20. I have turned off the verification (in your Settings) and not particularly missed it. For the few readers I have and the fewer comments, I want to be as hospitable as possible.

I do have the 14 days rule enforced so that all comments on posts older than that hit the "moderation" window, but as almost all of the comments on older posts are ads for "male enhancements" and the like that is not a problem, I just kill them.

  21. I think we can rule out the browsers as the culprits.

Jim, I've thought of turning off WV to see what happens. Perhaps the scene has changed over the years, and spamming would be more limited. I also like your idea of moderation for comments on old posts, although I still receive on-topic comments to posts that are years old. In those cases, I'd simply moderate them through and make the appropriate response.

Oh damn, for a second I thought you meant the Blogger *commenter* could turn this off, and not just the Blog host!

  23. JCF, I'm still thinking. I haven't quite decided yet.

  24. I sometimes wonder what the security value of these little codes really is. It seems to me more of a vision test (I sometimes have to put on my reading glasses to get these) than a pass to the Magic Kingdom. What are we trying to keep out? Near sighted trolls or spammers?

  25. There's only one way to find out...turn off the function and see what happens. I'm not there yet.

  26. PS, one of the word verifications Blogger demanded today involved upside-down numbers. How I'm supposed to put those in I do not know :(

  28. Where's that Mimo when you need her? ...

wv - "nalyner salvation"! You're right Mimi, they're out of control!

  29. Where, oh where is my evil twin, when I need her? Mimo! Mimo! Bueller! Bueller!

  30. It's actually catching! I didn't have this problem OR the double word thing until I read this post

  31. susankay, I'm so sorry. I did not know my blog was a carrier of the glitch.
