DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH NZ DEFEATS ANGLICAN COVENANT

From a correspondent in Christchurch, New Zealand:
Hi Mimi,

Have come home from Christchurch Synod meeting.  We had a vote on the Covenant.  Passed by laity, DEFEATED by clergy... therefore DEFEATED by Christchurch New Zealand.

Thought I'd share the good news!
This is good news, indeed.

  1. I may be wrong, but I'm guessing Bishop Victoria will be disappointed.

  2. Tim, Bishop Victoria is very much pro-covenant, but I've heard that she was quite gracious when the results of the vote were announced. I'm a bit surprised that a woman bishop would be pro-covenant, because the churches that adopt the covenant could possibly be prevented from ordaining women, or more women as bishops than are already in place, if one of the churches in the communion lodged an objection to further ordinations. It could be years before a consensus is reached. Why would a woman bishop want to risk barring the gate to other women who would wish to follow in her footsteps?

  3. Bishop Victoria is very much an Anglo-Catholic and the unity of the Church is very important to her. But I would not want to try to read her mind, as she's often hard to pin down. When she was my bishop we didn't always see eye to eye, but I have a great deal of respect for her.

I remember her saying to me once, 'We didn't win the issue of the ordination of women on the basis of rights; we won it on the basis of good theology'. That stuck in my mind.

  4. Alas, a good many churches in the communion don't agree with the good theology of ordination of women.
