Roy Bourgeois, a longtime peace activist and priest who had come under scrutiny for his support of women's ordination, has been dismissed from the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, which he served for 45 years, according to the congregation.
The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith made the dismissal in October, according to a news release issued Monday afternoon by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.
Fr Roy is a homeboy, originally from nearby Lutcher, Louisiana. Although we've never met, I've long admired him. His words on my sidebar inspired me to speak out for justice and equality over the years.
"Silence is the voice of complicity."
He had no previous notice that the dismissal was coming, according to canon lawyer, Fr Tom Doyle.
"The idea then was that things would continue and they would not dismiss
Roy and they would continue to dialogue," Doyle said. "And then this
just happened, unilaterally. [Bourgeois] had no idea."
Fr Roy was given the opportunity to recant, but he refused.
"In essence, you are telling me to lie and I say I do not believe God
calls both men and women to the priesthood," Bourgeois wrote in a formal
reply to Maryknoll's request. "This I cannot do, therefore I will not
recant."
Further biographical information on Fr Roy may be found at SOA Watch.
Silly modernists! They should have shown him the instruments of torture. Tragic, the breakdown of standards in the past 400 years.

It just shows the Romans for what they are. Surley the day is soon coming when people will stop supporting these ass holes.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy were a pedophile protector he would be rewarded with a Roman Holiday complete with luxury apartment, servants and his very own basilica.
ReplyDeleteAt least the Holy Office, formerly known as The Inquisition, no longer burns at the stake those who go astray. Fr Roy has spent a total of four years in prison after being arrested at various peaceful protests. He's guilty only of practicing liberation theology.
ReplyDeleteWhat will the Vatican do if it turns out that there is proof that Jesus was married? Quelle horreur! Their whole argument would collapse like a house of cards. Kudos to Fr. Roy for having the courage to stand by his convictions. Sorry if this is a duplicate, I can't remember if I actually hit publish.
ReplyDelete"The Episcopal Church Welcomes You"
ReplyDelete[What else can I say? Fr Roy's been living on borrowed time in the (current Regime Terrible) RCC for *decades* now]
I'd welcome Fr Roy with open arms.
DeleteThe Roman Catholic Church is true to its name: Roman first. With Rome came legalism, which was something of a blessing when the only rule was whatever the king wanted, but is well and truly out of date today. I hope Fr. Roy finds his way to us.

Roy followed in the tradition of Saint Oscar Romero, another of their own, whom the RCC does not honor as he deserves.
DeleteI once heard someone on EWTN (or was it only an EWTN-type Popoid?) try to make the case that, despite Abp Romero being murdered FOR his preaching DURING MASS, that didn't really make him a martyr! >:-O
DeleteHoly Oscar, pray for us...
Let Rome split hairs over whether Romero was a saint and a martyr. I've made up my mind, and he is in our Episcopal Church calendar of saints and is also represented in a statue on Westminster Abbey. In the present day church of Rome, the powers often don't recognize the saints amongst them, and all to often choose to discipline them.
