WHAT WOMAN IN HER RIGHT MIND...?

An acquaintance just called for my husband who is not home right now, and I gave him the number where Grandpère can be reached.
Caller: "Are you ready for the election?"

Me: "I voted already."

Caller: "You voted for Romney, of course."

Me: "You're joking.  What woman in her right mind would vote for Romney or for any Republican?"

Caller: "I know a lot of women who are voting for Romney."

Me: "Romney and the Republicans are so anti-women that I don't understand how any woman can vote for any of them."

Caller: "Well, I'd better try to get in touch with Tom (Grandpère) now."
I expect Grandpère will get an earful about my conversation with the man.  I must say that I'm at the point where I try to avoid conversations about politics, because they often end in acrimony, but when I'm asked a direct question, I have to answer.  Thank goodness this person did not appear to want to prolong the discussion, because I was not in the mood.  Anyone who doesn't know by now that Romney as president would be a disaster is almost certainly not a person who is open to being convinced otherwise.

  1. I would love to hear Grandpère's recounting of the subsequent conversation....

    1. I'll let you know, Doxy. I realize that my response was not of the sort that would lead to a civil discussion, but it was the caller's assumption that, of course, I would vote for Romney that ticked me off.

  2. I watched a Romeny campaign speech earlier today. He warmed and roused the crowd with his empty promises. I guess people are desperate for the myth of a quick fix, as if somehow he can create 12 million jobs, even though as he himself said, government doesn't create jobs; how he recounted a maudlin tale of the Challenger disaster (with himself as the point of the story!) but failed to mention how much his budget cutting will affect NASA.

I understand he is shortly to start the "Pants On Fire For Tomorrow Tour," in these last days of the campaign.

    1. What if Romney's pants really did catch on fire, or his nose grew long like Pinocchio's? Well, I can have my fantasies. Of course, I would want the fire put out before it caused Romney harm.

Let's see. Today is Thursday. Only four more days of Romney's lies till the campaign is over. We can be grateful for small favors. I hope and pray we will not have to listen to Romney for four years

In the meantime, Obama can continue to be presidential, which is no small thing. After all, he's already been anointed by erstwhile enemy, Chris Christie, as "outstanding".

  3. I bet your caller hung up cursing the 19th Amendment.

(I kid, of course. The caller would have no idea what the 19th Amendment was, only that he hopes he never has to talk to another "feminazi" ever again!)

    1. JCF, although the caller was polite, he did seem taken aback and in a hurry to get off the phone with wild and uppity me.

  4. Glad you made yourself clear, cher. These southern gentlemen do assume a lot, don't they?

    1. Damn, Muthah, the gentleman got my dander up, and if he didn't know before, he now knows that not all southern women are shrinking violets.

    2. Sometimes I think they're just oblivious - the world works just fine for them & they haven't noticed that it is perilous for others - in a way, they're in an echo chamber of "the way things should be" and won't come out of it until someone who matters to them smacks 'em up side a tha head and makes it all real to them (emphasis on the to them part).

    3. It's easy to assume a vote for Romney here. He's predicted to carry the state by +18 points.

  5. "I know a lot of women who are voting for Romney."

He's lying. He probably doesn't actually know any women who will actually speak to him.

    1. Bonnie, he's not lying. I know women who support Romney.

    2. Three in my church! Won't hear a word again' him! Well . . . they thought they couldn't hear a word against him -- I disabused them of that notion.

    3. Doxy, my mother, who has daughters only, has voted for Romney. "He won't," she said,"change Roe v. Wade. Wherever do you get your information?"

    4. Doxy, Mark, Laurel, here, too. There are women who will not be moved. The only women I've known to change because of Republican policies to control women's bodies are two of my nieces who seem to have had enough and hit the "Like" button on some of my Facebook political posts. On the other hand, my nephew unfriended me.

  6. You heard it here first: Obama will win. He'll squeak by in the popular vote (The storm in the NE Corridor will keep down the vote, I fear), but he will win the electoral college.

    1. Elizabeth, before the storm, though I never said so publicly (chicken!), I thought Obama would win, and his lead in the popular vote would be greater than expected. The storm changes things, that's for sure, and I'm not quite certain how in terms of turnout, but I still agree that Obama will win.
