Snow In Houston

Flowers in the snow

From a friend in Houston:
From 1" to 3" is predicted. It's coming down pretty hard right now but hasn't started to lay yet.

Aren't you jealous?

Yes, I am - in a way, but only in a way. At first, the snow is lovely and thrilling, but the last time it snowed here to any effect, we stayed frozen for three or four days. We are, in no way, prepared for snow here, and the icy roads and walkways came to be a nuisance after a spell. I expect that Houston is not that well prepared for snow, either.

And later came the pictures from my friend.

"The Broken Obelisk" by Barnett Newman

The sculpture stands in a pool on the site of the Rothko Chapel.

  1. Grandmere --I hear this storm is going to come to you, and then to us --a righteous nor'easter. We are scurrying to buy Juan some winter clothes!

  2. Margaret, the storm is headed our way. Snow is a possibility in Baton Rouge and to the north, but we'll likely get only cold weather and nasty winter rain.

You, on the other hand, may get a snowstorm.

  3. Hm, we're going to get snow tomorrow but I don't know if it's from the same storm. Be careful!

  4. Thanks for the picture. Since I could in no way get down to the Rothko Chapel today, it's nice for some portion of it to be brought to me; especially in the snow!

  5. Caminante, we're not going anywhere today, so we should be OK.

Rmj, my friend lives about a block away from the chapel. When I visited her, I tried to work in at least a brief visit on more than one occasion. The chapel and the grounds are places of peace.

  6. The photos ae beautiful! We're weeks if not months away from snow yet and it makes me feel full of anticipation. I hope the storm won't be troublesome for you, though!

  7. We also are supposed to get some snow tomorrow, but we are used to it. It has been unusually warm for early December, but that will all go away tonight. Can you believe it was nearly 60° two days ago and 55 today. Now it is 33°.

  8. Now it's your turn for snow. We here in Eastern Oregon are praying for more snow since it is vital to fill our reservoirs for irrigation water in the summer. It does help to be prepared, and when it gets deep, we sty indoors and enjoy the fireplace. God does make some beautiful stuff doesn't She. Enjoy!

  9. The sun is shining. The temperature is in the mid-30s. We didn't have much of a storm, just rain.

Dan, I pray you get your snow.

  10. My little Rowan wrote and told me all about it. He was very excited. I like this photo of the Rothko Obelisk. Love Mark Rothko.
