From Pink News:
The US school board official who wrote on his Facebook page that “queers” and “fags” should kill themselves says he will resign.
Clint McCance, who is the vice-president of the Midland school district in Arkansas , said last night he was sorry for his “hurtful” remarks.
Speaking to the openly gay journalist Anderson Cooper on his 360 CNN programme, he said: “My posts I made that were very hurtful, very ignorant in nature. Looking back on it right now and getting to, you know, scrutinise my own self and what I did. It’s horrible. And what I wrote was horrible.”
Yes, your comments were despicable, Clint. The Midland School Board is well rid of you. Perhaps if your example doesn't teach a few other bigots to rethink their hateful attitudes, it will serve to suggest that they should keep their hateful opinions private, so that the rest of us, especially the most vulnerable amongst us, won't be plagued by them.
Thanks to Cathy for the link.
Well, y'know. We're all sinners here. If he repents (for reals), then . . . he can be allowed back into human society.
ReplyDeleteJCF, surely we're all sinners. If Clint is repentant, he is forgiven.
ReplyDeleteYes, we´re all sinners...some are meaner than others, that would be me and I certainly heard our brother Clint defend his position by not addressing the reality of his fear and hate...forget the obvious stuff, this guy was wiggling around his issue by apologizing for using ¨ignorant words¨ (how true)...the ugly same issue that has impacted many of our lives is the REAL topic...maybe he needs more time for reflection/professional emotional help.
ReplyDeleteI´ve seen far too much to be lulled into a conjob by this guy or any of his pals (wherever they may be)...lives are at stake and our sisters and brothers in Uganda and other parts of Africa must live with junktalk like this from Bishops, Politicos and everyday thieves.
Leo, you're not mean, luv.
ReplyDeleteWhen did Anderson Cooper come out? I was not aware that he had, but the article says "openly gay journalist".
I dunno, I think Leo is being a wee bit harsh. I was feeling very unsympathetic to this guy yesterday but when I looked at it again today it struck me that it's not exactly easy to go on CNN and admit your own words have been "hateful" and "ignorant". Presumably he didn't have to do that and he almost certainly still moves in social circles where homophobia is rife and where he could have got away with privately sticking to his original line of "thought". Also, I suspect his incoherance is partly down to not being very articulate to start with and partly nerves at being on TV. Surely saying he's sorry is at least some sort of start? ...
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, Clint is forgiven even before he repents, as are the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteCathy, I believe that it makes a difference when the hateful remarks are directed at you. There are saints amongst us like Bishop Gene Robinson and Louie Crew, who seem to feel no bitterness at all toward those who hatefully abuse them, but when such vitriol is directed at me, I tell you that I have yet not arrived at the saintly state of Gene and Louie, and I may vent.
Having said that, Bp. Gene is right when he says, "Love them anyway." That is the Gospel.
I have no idea what is in Clint's heart. The test of true repentance is if you mend your ways, so only time will tell, and we may never know, because Clint has probably had his 15 minutes of fame.
Anderson Cooper came out? Where was I?
ReplyDeleteWhat you say, Rick.
ReplyDeleteGloria Vanderbilt would know, they say Mothers always know. Is she a proper Episcopalian?
ReplyDeleteWade, I'm sure Gloria knows Cooper is gay. We all know he's gay. He knows we know he's gay. I don't know if Gloria is a proper Episcopalian.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I missed the memo from Anderson "I don't talk about it" Cooper. But I think I did hear that he and the man he lives w/ jointly adopted a kid? "Signs Point to Yes" ;-/
