I can hear her voice.... I used to love their TV show, along with Jack Benny. Both had wonderful surrealistic elements that added to the humor and nurtured my early Dadaism
I feel so lucky to have grown up on George and Gracie.
George said of Gracie that she was NOT a comedienne -- she was an actress. Any way you slice it, her material and her delivery were so original they still take my breath away.
She was a brilliant comic of the old school. I doubt anyone has matched her delivery since.

ReplyDeleteGracie foiled George at every turn with her innocent, simple-minded persona. They were great. I LOL still at their sign-off exchange.

ReplyDeleteRe Gracie's cooking skills, I remember Blanche announcing that she had to leave "to fix some potato chips with cheese dip".
ReplyDelete"Blanche, you're so clever - when I have broken potato chips, I just throw them away."
Good one, Lapin.
ReplyDeleteIt is, isn't it, Paul? That one stuck in my mind many years ago.
